Sprouted wheat is a better option (maybe the only option) for those with mild sensitivities to wheat or gluten because of the health benefits.
What is sprouted wheat?
Updated: July 14, 2019
Sprouted wheat flour is a healthy alternative to white flour, whole grain flour and even whole wheat flour. It is a better option (maybe the only option) for those with mild sensitivities to wheat or gluten because of the health benefits it offers. Although, since it contains gluten, it is not a safe option for those who are allergic to gluten or for those who have Celiac disease.
What makes sprouted wheat a healthier option?
1. Easier to digest
First of all, it is easier to digest because the protein and gluten in the wheat is broken down.
2. More nutritious
Sprouted wheat provides the body with essential amino acids needed for healthy living. Benefits include: increased antioxidants, and increased vitamin C and vitamin B.
3. No phytic acid
Typical grains contain phytic acid, which is known as a mineral blocker or enzyme inhibitor. The vitamins and minerals become bound up in the phytic acid, they get locked together. Hence, when you consume the grains, your body can’t digest it. However, sprouted wheat is made by first soaking the grains, which kills off the phytic acid. As a result, it becomes possible to absorb the nutrients.
4. Increased fiber
Lastly, sprouted wheat has increased fiber content which, in turn, encourages regular bowel movements. I have noticed a significant improvement since adding it to my diet.
An important note
It is important to note that if you have an autoimmune disease, you should remove grains entirely from your diet altogether until your body has healed. This is done with an elimination diet.
After you have eliminated all grains, you can add in sprouted grains (and other foods) in moderation. Here is a post that will guide you through this process: https://howtodetoxyourlife.ca/easy-elimination-diet.
Where can you find sprouted wheat products?
You can find sprouted wheat products in the natural food section of your local grocery store or at a health food store. I recommend Ezekiel brand (bread) products for the most health benefits and Silver Hills Bakery brand (bread) products for the best taste. One downside to Silver Hills is that it contains yeast, which is not recommended for those who have candidiasis (yeast overgrowth). Although my Acupuncturist told me that you can kill the yeast if you toast your bread really well.
I hope you’ll consider adding sprouted wheat to your diet. I’m sure you will be pleased with the benefits.
Please share if you know someone who might find this helpful. Thanks! 🙂
