How to manage ADHD symptoms naturally

ADHD is also known as Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. It affects children and adults alike. If ADHD goes undetected and left untreated, it can follow the child into adulthood.

It can cause problems for children in school, and in life in general. It is very frustrating for parents and likely equally as frustrating for children who find it difficult to concentrate.


I understand that some people may wish to take medication and some may need medication. The choice is completely up to you. However, you may not be comfortable with the idea of taking medication, or perhaps you would like to try alternate methods to compliment the medication. In any case, I will introduce you to some possible triggers of ADHD, as well as some natural remedies for ADHD symptoms so you can treat ADHD naturally. Using these methods may help decrease the need for medication.

Possible Triggers

1. Culprits hiding in your food

There is evidence to suggest that additives, preservatives and artificial colors can cause ADHD symptoms, or at least make them worse. In particular, red dye (which I’ve heard many times), yellow dye, MSG (monosodium glutamate) and nitrites are most troublesome. You can find these hidden in many foods such as candy, treats, boxed food and sandwich meat among others. Of course, these ‘foods’ are no good for anybody anyway. A real food/whole food diet is best.

2. Sugar

Sugar causes your child’s blood sugar to spike which, in turn, can lead to hyperactivity. When your child’s blood sugar drops back down, this can cause lack of attention or concentration.

Granulated sugar (white, brown, cane sugar), corn syrup and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame are problematic.

This does not include natural sugars that are found in fruit; although, I wouldn’t suggest eating too much sweet fruit either as fruit contains sugar as well, sometimes a lot of it. I would suggest fruits with less sugar including berries, melons and citrus fruits.

This includes simple carbohydrates as well because these foods are converted to sugar once ingested. Such foods include white foods – white flour (white bread, cereal, crackers), white rice, potatoes, etc.

3. Allergens

Foods that your child is allergic, intolerant or sensitive to may cause ADHD symptoms as well. Common allergens include commercial wheat, dairy, fish, peanuts, eggs, soy, gluten and yeast (among others).

Anecdotal evidence

My nephew used to become very hyper; his behavior would become unmanageable. They discovered that he was allergic to red dye. Once this was discovered, red dye was removed from his diet and his behavior was no longer a problem.

I have had a similar experience with my oldest son a few years ago (and a few times since then). If my son has too much sugar, he is just wild. Now I try to curb the amount (and the kind) of sugar that he has. I remember one time, a few years ago, I took my son grocery shopping and he had just had a very sugary drink. He became so hyperactive and he would not listen; he was out of control. We actually had to leave the store.

These are just two examples of foods causing ADHD symptoms (not to say there are not other triggers besides food). I have been eliminating problematic foods from our diets for some time now and I highly recommend you do the same, or at least try – try eliminating one food at a time, beginning with the most troublesome foods (as described above).

Natural remedies

1. What to eat

It is best to eat a well-balanced diet. This includes nutritious foods that contain much-needed vitamins and minerals such as complex carbohydrates (veggies and some fruits), foods high in protein (chicken, beans, eggs, meat and nuts), foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids (fish, oils and nuts) and foods high in vitamin B and iron.

2. Exercise

Physical exercise enhances cognitive performance and brain function. Consequently, there is evidence to suggest that it helps increase concentration.

3. Essential oils for ADHD

Evidence has shown that some essential oils are helpful in treating symptoms of ADHD. In particular, vetiver essential oil and cedarwood essential oil are particularly useful. I would also suggest trying lavender essential oil or sweet orange essential oil as these essential oils are very calming. Be careful using essential oils with your little ones. Lavender and sweet orange essential oils are safe to use with kids three months and up.

Well known Physician, Dr. Mercola explains that there is no evidence to suggest that fidget spinners help with ADHD symptoms. In fact, some people say fidget spinners make ADHD symptoms worse. I don’t find fidget spinners calming. In fact, using a fidget spinner tends to make me feel anxious (I don’t have ADHD, I just thought I’d take one for a test run to see how it makes me feel).


I strongly believe in dealing with disease and disorders naturally whenever possible. However, I encourage you to deal with ailments as you choose and in a manner that makes you most comfortable.
