This homemade liquid laundry detergent recipe is simple to make with only three ingredients. Lemon essential oil is clean and fresh and helps to remove stains.
Homemade liquid laundry detergent
However, the best thing about this diy liquid laundry detergent is that it is incredibly inexpensive. You can do 48 loads of laundry for just over $5.
What is washing soda?
Washing soda is nothing more than baking soda with water and carbon dioxide. It is a cleaning agent and a water softener. Heating baking soda to a high temperature turns baking soda into washing soda. You can make your own by following these steps:
- Fill a metal pan with baking soda (a few cups).
- Then spread out the baking soda evenly and bake it at 400 degrees fahrenheit for 1-2 hours.
- Check it at 1 hour. If it is not flat and grainy (as washing soda should be), it is not ready yet.
Alternatively, you can buy washing soda. Once you have your washing soda, you can try the following recipe.
Castile soap is a natural cleaning agent as well. It is very versatile and can be used in many DIY personal care and cleaning recipes. I used citrus castile soap in this homemade liquid laundry detergent recipe but you could also use unscented castile soap and increase the amount of essential oil in this recipe.
Lemon essential oil
I added lemon essential oil in this recipe because it helps to keep my laundry smelling fresh and clean. Furthermore, it is a powerful stain fighter.
Toxic ingredients in commercial laundry detergents
According to, well-known Physician, Dr. Mercola, toxic ingredients that may be in your laundry detergent include: sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)/sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), 1,4-dioxane (a known carcinogen), NPE (nonylphenol ethoxylate) and phosphates (source).
The health concerns of these ingredients include respiratory problems, eye irritation, cancer and disruption of the endocrine system (hormones) (source).
Hence, I strongly recommend making your own homemade liquid laundry detergent. However, if you are not up for making your own, I recommend this kind.
- 8 cups boiling water
- 3/4 cup washing soda
- 1/4 cup castile soap
- 25 or more drops lemon essential oil (optional)
Pour 2 cups of boiling water into a large stainless steel bowl.
Add the washing soda and stir until it dissolves.
Pour in the castile soap and stir again.
Add the lemon essential oil.
Slowly add the remaining water and continue to stir (it may clump a bit).
Once the mixture cools, pour it into a 2L jug and shake a bit.
*This recipe will seem very watery at first. But after a day or two and a few shakes later, it will thicken and turn into a white gel-like substance. If it is clumpy, pour it into a food processor for a few seconds until it is pureed.
*Use about 1/3 of a cup for each medium-large size load of laundry.
*I usually make a double batch so it will last a while.
