You’ll love my homemade lip balm recipe with beeswax and oils. So luxurious and healing for your lips, and non-toxic of course.
Homemade lip balm recipe
Well, it’s that time of year again, well past time really. Such dry air this time of year. My lips get so chapped each winter. How about you? Time for a homemade lip balm recipe.
You can find non-toxic lip balm at a natural health food store. However, it is just as easy and inexpensive to make your own and you can add whatever scent (essential oils) you would like. As with all my DIY recipes, this homemade lip balm recipe includes only a few (natural) ingredients.
You could probably just use coconut oil and/or shea butter if that’s all you have on hand. Just beware, if you leave out the beeswax it will make the lip balm much softer.
My recommendation is to use beeswax in this homemade lip balm, not only for the above-mentioned reason but also because it’s great for the skin. However, you could certainly try it without.
Shea butter is a wonderful addition to homemade personal care products because it helps to hydrate the skin.
This diy lip balm makes approximately three tubes of lip balm (10ml each). You can use tubes or jars, whichever you prefer.
Update: I recently updated my recipe to use fractionated coconut oil instead of extra virgin coconut oil as my first batch ended up with a ‘bumpy’ consistency during the summer because extra virgin coconut oil melts in warm temperatures. Because I changed the type of coconut oil, I also had to tweak the amount of ingredients. The recipe below is my new, ultimate recipe for the perfect lip balm!

If you are not up for making your own homemade lip balm, you can buy mine HERE. My lip balm has been getting rave reviews. Thanks everyone! 🙂
- 5 mg coconut oil
- 10 mg beeswax
- 20 mg shea butter
- a few drops vitamin E oil (optional)
- 5 drops of essential oil I used vanilla
You'll need a double boiler so as not to burn the ingredients.*
Leave the beeswax and shea butter in the bowl/jar until they melt and turn into a liquid form. Once liquefied, add the coconut oil, turn off the burner and remove from heat.
*You can make a double boiler by putting some water in a saucepan/pot, turning the burner on medium to high and placing a metal bowl on top of the pan. Alternatively, you can place a glass jar (mason jar) in the saucepan.
*You'll have to be quick adding the vitamin E and essential oils and with pouring the mixture into the tubes as the ingredients will solidify quite quickly.
Where I buy my ingredients
I am very frugal. My mom taught me well. I always hunt down the best products for the best price. Here is a list of what I used and where I bought it.
- Essential oils – Plant Therapy or Amazon
- Organic virgin coconut oil – Costco
- Shea butter – Amazon or Well.ca
- Vitamin E oil – Amazon
- Beeswax – Amazon
Please share if you know someone who would love this recipe. Thanks! 🙂
