Homemade Lip Balm Recipe

Well, it’s that time of year again, well past time really. Such dry air this time of year. My lips get so chapped each winter. How about you? Time for a homemade lip balm recipe.

You can find non-toxic lip balm at a natural health food store. However, it is just as easy and inexpensive to make your own and you can add whatever scent (essential oils) you would like. As with all my DIY recipes, this homemade lip balm recipe includes only a few (natural) ingredients.

Ingredients

You can whip up this homemade lip balm recipe in just a few minutes and it is easy to make. All you need is beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, vitamin E oil and essential oil.

You could probably just use coconut oil and/or shea butter if that’s all you have on hand. Just beware, if you leave out the beeswax it will make the lip balm much softer. Also know that coconut oil melts in the summer. My recommendation is to use beeswax in this homemade lip balm recipe, not only for the above-mentioned reasons but also, because it is great for the skin. However, you could certainly try it without.

Shea butter is a wonderful addition to homemade personal care products because it helps to hydrate the skin.

This homemade lip balm recipe makes 4 tubes of lip balm (10ml each). You can use tubes or jars, whichever you prefer.

Homemade Lip Balm Recipe
Ingredients
  • 5 mg beeswax
  • 10 mg coconut oil
  • 10 mg shea butter
  • a few drops vitamin E oil
  • 5 drops of essential oil I used vanilla
Instructions
  1. You'll need a double boiler so as not to burn the ingredients.*
  2. Place the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in the metal bowl or mason jar.
  3. Leave the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in the bowl/jar until they melt and turn into a liquid form. Once liquefied, turn off the burner and remove from heat.
  4. After you've removed the oils from the heat, add the vitamin E and essential oil(s). Add the mixture to your tubes/jars.* Voila! Your homemade lip balm recipe is complete.
Recipe Notes

*You can make a double boiler by putting some water in a saucepan/pot, turning the burner on medium to high and placing a metal bowl on top of the pan. Alternatively, you can place a glass jar (mason jar) in the saucepan.

*You'll have to be quick adding the vitamin E and essential oils and with pouring the mixture into the tubes as the ingredients will solidify quite quickly.

Please share if you know someone who would love this recipe. Thanks! 🙂
