Homemade laundry detergent recipe

Updated: May 8, 2019

I’ve become addicted to making my own simple, homemade, non-toxic recipes like this homemade laundry detergent. Homemade recipes are so easy, quick and cost-efficient.

What I like best about making homemade recipes is that you can make them your own – you can choose the scent, or the combination of scents. Furthermore, you can tweak the recipe any way you like.

There are only three ingredients in this simple homemade laundry detergent without borax – washing soda, soap flakes and citrus essential oils. Although some natural health bloggers feel that borax is safe, I am on the fence; so I decided to create a recipe for laundry detergent without borax.

If you have never heard of washing soda, it is simply water, baking soda and carbon dioxide. You can find it online at Amazon or Well.ca. However, you can easily make your own with baking soda. See my recipe for homemade liquid laundry detergent to find out how.

I love citrus, it smells so fresh and clean! Using these essential oils, your clothes will come out smelling clean but not with an overly powerful perfume smell like commercial laundry detergents. However, you can substitute these essential oils with any other scent combinations that you like.

If you’d rather not make your own, I recommend this kind.

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe
  • 1 1/3 cup washing soda
  • 2/3 cup soap flakes
  • 25 drops each lemon, lime, grapefruit and orange essential oils
  1. Pour washing soda in a bowl.

  2. Add soap flakes and stir.

  3. Pour in essential oils and chop (cut in) to combine with washing soda and soap flakes.

Recipe Notes

*I recommend using 2 tablespoons for a small load, 3 tablespoons for a medium load and 4 tablespoons for a large load. I also recommend using warm water to begin with to dissolve the soap. If you are washing whites, you can switch to cold water after the soap has dissolved.

Where I buy my ingredients

I am very frugal. My mom taught me well. I always hunt down the best products for the best price. Here is a list of what I used and where I bought it.

  1. Washing soda – Amazon or Well.ca
  2. Soap flakesAmazon
  3. Citrus essential oils – Plant Therapy or Amazon

Please share if you know someone who would love this recipe. Thanks! 🙂
