Homemade hand soap
I love quick, easy-to-make, inexpensive DIY recipes like this homemade hand soap! This DIY foaming homemade hand soap can be whipped up in about five minutes. I never buy hand soap. If you don’t want to buy it anymore, you must try this simple recipe.
Since one of the ingredients is just water, it costs much less than store-bought hand soap. I always make my own hand soap; it is well worth the time and effort.
Toxic ingredients in commercial hand soaps
Typically, commercial hand soaps are made with unsafe ingredients including an ingredient called Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS). SLS is what causes soap to make suds and bubbles. However, it is toxic because it is carcinogenic (can cause cancer). It is unnecessary and it is best to avoid it whenever possible.
There are only three ingredients in this recipe and one of them, as I mentioned, is simply water. Castile soap is the other main ingredient used in this recipe. Castile soap is a natural, non-toxic soap oil. It is very versatile and can be used in many natural personal care and cleaning products.
Finally, this recipe calls for vitamin E oil which helps to preserve the soap because it is an antioxidant. Vitamin E oil is also wonderful for your skin.
You may not have all the ingredients on hand but these ingredients are staples for many other do-it-yourself (DIY) personal care and cleaning recipes, especially castile soap, as mentioned. Furthermore, you only need a small amount of each ingredient, which makes it absolutely worth it.
You can simply use the lavender-scented castile soap, which is lovely. Otherwise, you can use whichever essential oil(s) you like, or a combination of essential oils (I also like a combination of lime and cedarwood).
This homemade hand soap is very silky! However, if you want it even silkier, you can double the amount of castile soap.
If you are not up for making your own this time around, I recommend this kind.
- 1/2 cup water distilled or boiled*
- 1/4 cup lavender castile soap
- 1 tsp vitamin E oil*
Pour the water into a foam soap dispenser (before the castile soap to prevent bubbles).
Pour in the castile soap.
Add the vitamin E oil.
Add essential oil (if not using scented castile soap).*
* Using distilled or boiled water diminishes bacteria and other impurities in the water.
*This can be made into a liquid soap (for use with a liquid soap dispenser instead of a foam soap dispenser) but I do not find it works nearly as well.
Where I buy my ingredients
I am very frugal. My mom taught me well. I always hunt down the best products for the best price. Here is a list of what I used and where I bought it.
- Lavender castile soap – local grocery store (Superstore) or Well.ca
- Vitamin E oil – Amazon
- Plant Therapy essential oils – Plant Therapy or Amazon
