Homemade dishwasher detergent
I love my dishwasher and I use it as often as possible. I fill it to the brim and load pots and pans in there sometimes too, ha! When I do, I get out my trusty homemade dishwasher detergent. It is simple to make with only four ingredients.
You know, my mom actually doesn’t mind doing the dishes. I shouldn’t talk really; I enjoy doing the laundry. It’s very satisfying to make my bed, empty the basket of freshly cleaned clothes on my bed and put the clothes away – especially on a nice, sunny day when I can feel the hot sun on my back. It’s the little things in life, you know? I find it relaxing as well. Ok, I’m a bit weird maybe. 😉
My mom had a dishwasher, and it was just a pain in the butt for her. She would often end up washing the dishes by hand instead anyway. Whenever I would visit, I would always start to fill up the dishwasher and she would put a load on. But sometimes, I would just end up helping her wash/dry them by hand. Old habits die hard I guess. Anyhow, I digress. Here is your quick, simple recipe for diy dishwasher detergent.
- 1 c washing soda
- ½ c citric acid
- ¼ c coarse salt
- 10-20 drops or more lemon essential oil*
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix thoroughly. Add essential oils. Pour mixture in a glass bowl (or something similar) with a lid.
*You could use another kind of essential oil if you like. I would suggest you use citrus (like lime or grapefruit) as it helps to repel grease. You could combine a couple of essential oils as well if you like.
*To remove spots on your dishes, you can use white vinegar in the rinse compartment if needed.
*This diy dishwasher detergent may harden after a while and can be difficult to scoop. To remedy this, give it a good stir and chop it up a bit each time you use it.
*This homemade dishwasher detergent may work well for some people and not for others. This can be caused by having hard or soft water, as well as the pH of your water. To give it the best chance, be sure to rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher.
Where I buy my ingredients
I am very frugal. My mom taught me well. I always hunt down the best products for the best price. Here is a list of what I used and where I bought it.
