Homemade Air Freshener with Lemon
Updated: Feb 7, 2020
Lemon juice offers many wonderful physical health benefits, which is why it is arguably the healthiest drink you can have in the morning. Most importantly, it’s completely natural, a gift from the earth. Which is why I’ve chosen to use it as the main ingredient in this natural homemade air freshener (besides the fact that it smells amazing).
Another wonderful benefit of lemon juice is its cleaning ability. Since lemon juice is anti-bacterial and disinfecting, it’s great for cleaning. You can use vinegar for cleaning as well, but I prefer lemon juice as it smells much better. I use lemon essential oil) in many DIY cleaning recipes.
Not only does lemon essential oil smell very clean and fresh but it’s also very effective at eliminating odors. Besides the amazing smell, this is the main reason I’ve added it to this homemade air freshener.
In keeping my promise to offer you simple, quick recipes, here is my recipe for natural homemade air freshener, containing only 3 ingredients. You can use any essential oil you like. You’ll just need a small spray bottle – a blue or amber glass bottle is best.*
This is my all-time favorite natural, non-toxic homemade cleaning recipe! You will love how simple it is to make and you might have the ingredients on hand.
Update: Originally, I used lavender essential oil in this recipe. However, although it has been very popular, I didn’t care for it much myself. Hence, I changed the recipe to include lime essential oil instead.
Update#2: Originally this recipe included lemon juice but if you use lemon juice, you really should keep it in the fridge so it doesn’t become rancid (probably the reason for the couple of bad reviews I got for this recipe), and who wants to keep their air freshener in the bathroom. Thus, I switched out the lemon juice for witch hazel instead.
- 2 tbsp distilled water
- 2 tbsp witch hazel
- 10 - 20 drops lavender essential oil
Add witch hazel to the spray bottle.
Add the distilled water.
Add the lavender essential oil.
Give a little shake.
*The reason for using a blue or amber glass bottle is because essential oils will degrade in a plastic bottle if exposed to the sun.
Please share if you know someone who might love this recipe. Thanks! 🙂
