Healthy chocolate milk recipe
I don’t know about you, but I love chocolate! Most women do; the ones who don’t (like my mom) are just weird…ha, just joking…well maybe. 😉
For those of you like me who are lactose and/or casein intolerant, having an admiration for chocolate is somewhat torturous. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Since I refuse to give up chocolate, I had to find some healthy substitutions, or make them myself. Besides, cocoa is actually good for you because it contains antioxidants; it’s the refined sugar and dairy that makes it a not-so-healthy choice. So, I created this delicious healthy chocolate milk to satisfy my chocolate cravings as well as for my fellow lactose-intolerant chocolate lovers.
You may be able to relate when I say that I find it hard to keep up with homemade baking/cooking. I am intolerant to so many foods, it seems impossible to keep up (plus I have two kids). That’s why most of my recipes are simple and take little time to make.
This healthy homemade chocolate milk is no exception; it is actually just my paleo hot chocolate chilled. It is really good either way, hot or cold. However, I enjoy it like this the most. I make a large batch and keep it in the fridge to enjoy whenever I need a chocolate/sweet fix. It’s delicious, enjoy!
Dairy-free, lactose-free, refined-sugar free*
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 tbsp cocoa
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 dash Himalayan salt
Combine ingredients in saucepan on medium-high heat until steaming and until clumps are gone.
Chill for a few hours. Enjoy!
*You could use canned coconut milk if you like. I tried this but I found it too rich. I tried making this with unsweetened vanilla almond milk as well and it was equally delicious!
Where I buy my ingredients
I am very frugal. My mom taught me well. I always hunt down the best products for the best price. Here is a list of what I used and where I bought it.
- Coconut milk – local grocery store (Sobeys or Superstore)
- Himalayan salt – Costco (I buy a huge container of this for a great price)
- Maple syrup – Costco or local grocery store (Sobeys or Superstore)
- Cocoa – local grocery store (Sobeys or Superstore)
Please share if you know someone who would love this recipe. Thanks! 🙂
